A youth from a noble family with little money or connections, Julius Caesar weds the daughter of the most powerful man in Rome, Cornelia Cinna. When he is ordered to divorce his wife by the usurper, Sulla, Caesar defies him and both he and Cornelia are sent into exile. Caesar wins glory fighting against rebels at Mytilene. On Sulla's death, Caesar returns to Rome and begins a career as a prosecutor fighting corruption in Roman government. He makes enemies, who arrange for him to be kidnapped and held for ransome by pirates. Caesar is freed, raises an army, and destroys the pirates who had held him. After winning more glory in Spain, Caesar learns the hard truth that all glory is fleeting as he loses the one person he has ever loved.
